87. Two Meissen cutlery handles from the Swan Service, circa 1740-42
Modelled by J.J. Kaendler in low relief with swans swimming among bullrushes, a heron to the left and another in flight overhead, the bottom painted on each side with the arms of Brühl and Kolowrat-Krakowska, the top with scattered indianische Blumen below a gilt dentil border, mounted with later steel blade (M. Levy Dresden) and fork, the handles (excluding mounts): 7cm (minor retouching to enamels and gilding) (2)
Other examples of cutlery handles are in the Klingenmuseum, Solingen, and in the Dresden Porcelain Collection (illustrated in U. Pietsch (ed.), Schwanenservice - Meissener Porzellan für Heinrich Graf von Brühl, 2000, p.181, no. 63). Another was sold by Bonhams London, 4 July 2024, lot 162.
