Marque et époque Qianlong (1736-1795)
A VERY RARE IMPERIAL WHITE GLASS 'CHRYSANTHEMUM' DISH
Incised Qianlong four-character mark and of the period
The gently rounded sides finely moulded with forty-eight fluted petals radiating from a slightly sunken well and rising to a foliate rim carved with a slightly bevelled edge, all supported on a wedge-shaped foot, the base with a four-character wheel-cut mark in a double square, the glass a milky-white colour.
17.6cm (6 7/8in) diam. (2).

Chrysanthemum-shaped dishes made of glass are rare and only few examples are known, all of them bearing Qianlong marks. Compare a lemon yellow glass dish, formerly in the collection of Baroness Sapuppo and d'Essen, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 30 October 2000, lot 291; an opaque orange glass dish, illustrated in Claudia Brown and Donald Rabiner, Clear as Crystal, Red as Flame: Later Chinese Glass, New York, 1990, cat.no.32; and a translucent red glass example, sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 20 November 2002, lot 305. A blue glass chrysanthemum dish with Qianlong mark from the collection of Carl Kempe, is published in The Arts of the Ching dynasty, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, 1964, no.319, pl.104.
A very similar carved wood stand with dragon and prunus decoration from the collection of Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), is published in Herbert Bräutigam,Schätze Chinas aus den Museen der DDR, Hildesheim, 1990, no.261.
