94. A SHINTŌ KATANA IN MOUNTS
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century
Honzukuri, iorimune chūgissaki, toriizori, forged in koitamehada with a narrow notare tempered edge, the ōsuriage nakago tang with three holes and kiri yasurime (file marks), 72,5cm, with a one-piece gilt-copper habaki; the 19th-century koshira-e comprising a black-lacquer ribbed saya, the tsuka wrapped in black silk and fitted with shakudō migakiji fuchigashira decorated with gold dragons, the gilt menuki formed as shishi (Chinese lions), with an almost circular shakudō tsuba chiselled on the surface with a woven bamboo texture and decorated with chrysanthemum blossoms in gold overlays
