During his time in China, Haas formed an important collection of paintings by modern Chinese artists including works by Zhang Daqian, Ren Yi and others, some of which were exhibited in Berlin, Offenburg and Düsseldorf. The poetic inscription on the painting refers to Zhang Muhan (1900-1982) from Huqiu in Anhui province, a student of Lu Xu (1818-1919), who served as secretary-general of the Control Council in Taiwan after 1949.
