Beautiful and rare engraved glass goblet, attributed to Christian Gottfried Schneider, Silesia (Hirschberger Tal), Warmbrunn, circa 1740 A fine and rare Silesian (Hirschberger Tal) engraved goblet attributed to Christian Gottfried Schneider, Warmbrunn, circa 1740 The tapering bowl divided into six panels, three finely engraved in Tiefschnitt with female figures in elaborate costume allegorical of months of the year, each respectively titled 'Januier', 'Feurier' and 'Mars' within a cartouche below, alternating with three panels of laub-und-Bandelwerk and acanthus scrollwork in Hochschnitt on a polished ground, the base of the bowl cut with gadroons between faceted bands, on a hexagonal baluster stem cut with overlapping lappets to the upper part, the conical foot with a formal border to the footrim and cut with a |0|0| pattern rosette underneath, 21.3cm high (rim cut down and small bruise to rim) Provenance Dr K Rühmann Collection, Vienna With Helene Brück Kunsthandel, 6 March 1989 Literature Illustrated by J Schlosser, Das Alte Glas, 1977, p.234, fig.192 This glass belongs to an important group of Silesian goblets and footed beakers with Hochschnitt and Tiefschnitt engraving. A pair of Silesian bottles and stoppers both engraved with three female figures allegorical of months of the year (July, August, September and October, November, December respectively), almost certainly by the same hand responsible for the present lot, is illustrated by Rudolf von Strasser, Licht und Farbe, 2002, pp.287-9, nos.168-9, where the decoration is attributed to Christian Gottfried Schneider. It is suggested by von Strasser that French copperplate engravings may have served as the source prints for the figures. In common with the present lot, the clothing of the figures is characterised by particularly detailed rendering of the folds with the hems mostly turned up. The arms and legs of the figures are skilfully foreshortened to enliven the sense of perspective. The way in which the knees of some of the figures are indicated beneath their robes, together with the emphasis of the eyes by polishing, are also characteristics of Schneider's work.
