A beautiful armour in Maximilian style, the helmet with grotesque visor dating: 1840 circa provenance: Germany, Man-at-arms helmet with single-piece skull, hammered, twisted lower comb with wide longitudinal fullers on the sides. Good visor shaped as a grotesque mask, with rectangular eye holes surmounting the face, finely worked in relief, complete with pierced eyes, nose, moustaches and mouth provided with air holes. Beaver and nape-guard with lowered edge and file-roped, twisted border. Closing loops with press buttons. Plume-holder at the back. A row of thick, iron rivets all around the helmet. Two-plated nape-guard worked en suite with skull and neckguard. The visor with rose-headed hinges. Gorget with four-lamed plates, file-roped and twisted neckline. Round breast-plate, with pauldron small plates and neckline featuring typical, very thick twisted cords turning outwards. The right side with holes in case a lance-rest should be mounted. Back-plate and breast-plate worked en suite. The backpiece with two plates at the front and four plates at the back. Three-plate tassets, both thickly twisted on the lower border. Complete brassards. Pauldrons with neck-collars with file-roped border, the couters with big wings. Knuckle-shields with inarticulated gauntlets. Complete full-leg defense, provided with sabatons with the same decorations as the other parts. Smooth greaves. The armour is finely decorated en suite: plates worked with longitudinal fullers, delimiting relieved and outlined bands, plates with festooned borders. Complete with leather strings and rivets with brass head. The armour is exhibited on an appropriate manikin with a high, wooden pedestal with moulded and chiselled decorations. Also with iron mail skirt with roped rings. High-quality item, comparable to the original, antique ones. Total length with base: 240 cm circa.
