A CARPIGIAN PANEL, AMBIT OF GIOVANNI GAVIGNANI, CIRCA 1660 PANEL, CARPI, AMBIT OF GIOVANNI GAVIGNANI, 1660 CIRCA in scagliola made in black and white bichrome, depicting St. Anthony of Padua in adoration of the Child , a subject derived directly from the central part of the important antependium made in 1652 by the Carpi scagliolista Giovanni Gavignani (Carpi 1632-1680) for the altar of St. Anthony in the church of San Nicolò in Carpi, a signed and dated artefact, considered for a long time the oldest dated exemplar of the Carpi school.
