A DISH, CASTELDURANTE, 1552 DISH, CASTELDURANTE, 1552 Majolica dish painted in polychrome in green, cobalt blue, brown and bister, shallow cavetto, broad horizontal brim with rounded rim, resting on a low ring foot. In the centre of the cavetto, resting on a turf and surrounded by fluttering ribbons, a coat-of-arms (unidentified) centred on a silver rampant lion with a horizontal cobalt blue band on a yellow background, on either side of which are two letters P within a thin oval reserve. The brim is decorated with four larger groups of trophies arranged to form a square, drawn with rapid strokes in grisaille brown, highly watercoloured and shaded with bistro, set on a cobalt blue background decorated with thin ribbons; at the right and left centres the date 1552 and the initials PB within rectangular cartouches. The work in question belongs to a type traditionally attributed to the Casteldurante workshops, although present throughout the Duchy of Urbino, and boasts two significant comparative examples, one in the Musée de Lyon in the Gillet collection, consistent in form and decoration, and the other in the Formica collection in Rimini; diameter 23.1 cm, base 10 cm, h. 3 cm Comparative literature C.
