Lot no. 14
A DISH, PESARO, WORKSHOP OF PAINTER OF ZENOBIA, 1550-1560 DISH, PESARO, WORKSHOP OF PITTORE DI ZENOBIA, 1550-1560 in faience decorated in polychrome with cobalt blue, antimony yellow, orange yellow, copper green and manganese brown. The cutting board has a continuous flat form slightly concave in the centre, and rests on a wide, slender ring foot. On the reverse, the legend in cobalt blue Egressio Noe da Arca explains the scene painted on the front: from the ark, placed in the background, several pairs of animals descend, while in the foreground Noah and his family transport their possessions to the ground. The landscape in the background shows some mountains and a few clumps of earth emerging from the waters. In terms of painting style, the chopping board can be attributed to the Duchy of Urbino between 1550 and 1560. A stylistic comparison derives from some plates attributed to the workshop of the painter of Zenobia in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig in which we find the same manner of making the figures with elongated bodies, short muscular legs, smaller heads with elongated faces; diam. 22.2 cm, foot diam. 9.4 cm, h. 2.4 cm Comparative literature J.
