A FINE BLACK STONE STELE OF SURYA. Northeastern India, Pala, 11th/12th c. Height 77 cm. The sun god and his retinue on a charriot pulled by seven horses. Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, purchased with Yvonne Moreau Gobard, Paris, in 1974. ------------------------------------------------- STELE OF THE SUN GOD SURYA. North-east India, Pala, 11th/12th century H 77 cm. Black stone. The standing god with a high crown holds two lotus flowers in full bloom and is flanked by Rajni and Nisprabha, as well as flying apsaras, mythical creatures and archers. In front of him at his feet sit Aruna, the driver of the sun chariot with seven horses, and his winged brother Garuda. Provenance: Swiss private collection, acquired from Yvonne Moreau-Gobard, Paris 1974.
