A FOUNTAIN BASIN, UMBRIA OR TUSCANY, LATE 14TH CENTURY
FOUNTAIN BASIN, UMBRIA OR TUSCANY, LATE 14TH CENTURY
in white marble, octagonal in shape with a slightly convex band, it houses protomes on four faces: one male, the other female, one of a bearded protagonist (his head covered by a turban), the fourth of a lion, in whose mouth there is a hole for the water to flow out. According to Antonio Giuliano, author of a critical review of the work, originally the fountain was of the so-called 'falling' type, i.e. where the water descended from an element placed in the centre of the basin, now lost, and, bathing the protomes, collected in a larger basin, where it could be collected. Again according to Giuliano, "the fountain belongs to an environment that inherited cues from Frederick's formal culture, an environment of which Nicola Pisano and later Arnolfo di Cambio were to be the major interpreters"; 27x41x40 cm
