A Gendarmerie uniform with sabre dating: about 1870 provenance: Papal States, Bicorn made of solid felt (small damaged parts), bordered with black silk featuring stripe with Papal tiara and grenade fixing a gold and silver cockade, amaranth red plume with its metal case, silver-thread ornaments on the flaps of the bicorn, black leather sweat-band and black silk cap; blue cloth tailcoat, outlines at the collar, cuffs and at the amaranth cloth tails, grenades with silver embroideries at the tails, large buttons with the Papal symbol and the inscription 'Gendarmeria Pontificia' (one detached but still present); bandoleer with cartridge box featuring the Corps ornament (of a later period); bandoleer with clutched for the sword and bronze plaque of the Papal Gendarmerie; epaulettes and original wire bindings of a later period; set with a pair of nickel-silver spurs, a pair of gloves and a pair of gauntlets. Sabre with straight, single-and-false-edged blade, the tang with Pontifical marks; brass hilt with four loop-guards, the main one marked '186', the butt-plate marked '241', short cap; leather-covered wooden grip (small missing parts) with brass wire binding; complete with iron scabbard with two lugs, the upper band with remains of marking. dimensions various cm.
