A GENOESE COMMODE, WORKSHOP OF GAETANO RENOLDI, LATE 18TH CENTURY
CHEST OF DRAWERS, GENOA, WORKSHOP OF GAETANO RENOLDI, LATE 18TH CENTURY
Inlaid and panelled in various woods with a rectangular top in red marble, front with three drawers, the central one of which is larger; the entire surface has rich and varied decoration with festoons, leaf volutes and vases of flowers, figures of fantastic animals and medallions enclosing alternating male and female profiles; truncated pyramid legs also inlaid with floral motifs. The stylistic characteristics of this chest of drawers allow it to be fully included in the production of Gaetano Renoldi, a Milanese cabinet-maker by birth and Genoese by adoption, who founded his workshop in Genoa, from which furniture and inlays often inscribed 'works by Gaetano Renoldi, a Milanese cabinet-maker living in Strada Novissima in Genoa'. A production that, although closely related to Maggiolini's, shows its own characteristics as much in the structure of the furniture as in the choice of decorative fittings. In fact, the furniture made by Renoldi follows the traditional structure of Genoese chests of drawers from the last quarter of the 18th century, with the corner uprights slightly jutting out from the squared body and the upside-down obelisk feet; also typical is the scheme with the first drawer thinner and separated by a thin inlaid band from the two lower ones, which form a single panel; 89x125x58.5 cm
