A GROUP OF IVORY FIGURES: PIETÀ WITH ANGELS Probably German, ca. 1680/1700. A Multi-part ivory figure carved in high relief. Central figure with the body of Christ on the knees of Mary, the Mother of God, flanked by two standing, draped angels and two further seated cupids, one holding the hand of Christ. Expressive poses and finely worked drapery. A small mounting hole in the center at the top. 20 × 20 cm. The wings of the standing angels are nailed on. Losses to the fingers of Mary, to the right hand of the right angel, and to the right hand of the left angel. Cracks, rubbing and minor chips. Provenance: - Maria Baer, London, 1 February 1978. - Collection Dr. E. Boehlen, Berne, acquired from the above gallery. Although no direct model for this group of figures is known and the geographical attribution is also unclear, the volumetry and fullness of Mary's figure is reminiscent of Michelangelo's Pietà of 1498/99, although the Christ figure is more reminiscent of Northern European works. Even if the attribution to the sculptor Georg Petel proposed by the late collector Dr. E. Boehlen is not tenable according to current knowledge, the facial physiognomy and the carving of the Christ figure's hair are remotely reminiscent of works by the latter (cf. Norbert Lieb & Theodor Müller: Georg Petel. Berlin 1973, cat. 3, figs. 6 and 7 and cat. 13, figs. 49 and 50). The absence of an attribution to date in no way detracts from the work, as the carving captivates with its expressiveness and the tragic gestures and facial expressions of the protagonists. Due to the use of protected materials and the lack of documentation, this object cannot be exported from Switzerland. ------------------------------------------------- ELFENBEINGRUPPE EINER PIETÀ MIT ENGELN Wohl deutsch, um 1680/1700. Mehrteiliges Elfenbein im Hochrelief geschnitzt. Zentrale Figur mit dem Leichnam Christi auf den Knien der Muttergottes Maria, flankiert von zwei stehenden, drapierten Engeln sowie zwei weiteren sitzenden Amoretten, der eine hält die Hand Christi. Ausdrucksstarke Posen und fein ausgearbeitete Faltenwürfe. Mittig oben ein kleines Befestigungsloch. 20 × 20 cm. Flügel der stehenden Engel angenagelt. Fehlstellen an den Fingern der Maria, an der rechten Hand des rechten Engels, an der rechten Hand des linken Engels. Risse, Bereibungen und kleinere Bestossungen. Provenienz: - Maria Baer, London, 1. Februar 1978. - Sammlung Dr. E. Boehlen, Bern, bei obiger Galerie erworben. Obwohl kein direktes Vorbild für diese Figurengruppe bekannt und die geografische Zuschreibung auch nicht eindeutig ist, erinnert die Volumetrie und Fülle unserer Marienfigur an Michelangelos Pietà von 1498/99, wobei die Christusfigur eher an nordeuropäische Arbeiten erinnert. Auch wenn die vom verstorbenen Sammler Dr. E. Boehlen vorgeschlagene Zuschreibung an den Bildhauer Georg Petel nach heutigem Wissenstand nicht haltbar ist, erinnert die Gesichtsphysiognomie und die Schnitzerei der Behaarung der Christusfigur entfernt an Arbeiten letzteren (Vgl. Norbert Lieb & Theodor Müller: Georg Petel. Berlin 1973, Kat. 3, Abb. 6,7 bzw. Kat. 13, Abb. 49,50). Die bisherige Absenz einer Zuschreibung tut dem Werk in keiner Weise Abbruch, besticht die Schnitzerei doch durch ihre Expressivität, der tragischen Gestik und Mimik der Protagonisten. Aufgrund der Verarbeitung von artengeschützten Materialien und fehlenden Dokumenten kann dieses Objekt nicht von der Schweiz ins Ausland exportiert werden.
