A LARGE INDIAN LAQUERED PAPIER-MACHE TRAY
India, Ca. 19th century AD .
A finely painted lacquered papier-mâché tray of circular form features an intricate central medallion depicting a royal enthronement scene, flanked by courtiers and musicians in a lush floral setting. Surrounding the medallion are multiple vignettes of courtly entertainments, battles, and hunts, each within floral and vegetal roundels. The entire composition is set against a densely patterned ground of intertwined flowers, birds, and arabesques, enclosed within a wide border of alternating stylised blossoms and leafy tendrils. The finely detailed figures, expressive facial features, and vibrant use of red, gold, and green pigments align with the Safavid and Qajar traditions of Persian lacquerware, which were often used for ceremonial or decorative purposes. The tray exhibits a high-gloss lacquer finish, highlighting the luminous colours and the meticulous brushwork that defines the elaborate courtly narratives. Such trays were commonly produced in royal workshops for the Persian aristocracy, serving as both functional and highly decorative objects. The influence of Persian miniature painting is evident in the delicate rendering of figures and landscapes.
