A LARGE MAMLUK ENGRAVED BRASS BASIN, EGYPT OR SYRIA, LATE 15TH/ EARLY 16TH CENTURY of deep rounded form with everted rim, profusely engraved to the exterior with four inscription-filled cartouches interspersed by roundels containing heraldic blazons, all on a ground of split-palmette interlace, a band of trefoil motifs around the foot, the interior with roundels and partial cartouches filled with vegetal and geometric interlace 55.3 cm. diam. Provenance Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 9 October 2014, lot 23. Inscriptions: a verse from a poem in Arabic and the owner's name, mimma 'umila bi-rasm al-mu'allim muhammad ibn al-hajj muhyi al-din yarju al-maghfara min..., 'what was made for the teacher Muhammad ibn al-Hajj Muhyi al-Din. He wishes forgiveness from...'.
