A LARGE RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP China, 17th – early 18th century. Finely carved in high relief with Shoulao on a crane, flying towards a group of three scholars, standing above an incised wavy pattern, with a deer beneath, the openwork handle formed by two gnarly pine trees, below the inner rim with a further pine tree in reticulated carving. Provenance: From the collection of Alexander Popov in Novi Sad, Kingdom of Serbia, acquired between 1900-1920. Condition: Some age cracks, nibbling and small losses, including a section of the deer’s head. The wooden base is fixed to the cup, the bottom therefore cannot be inspected (damages possible). Weight: 432.1 grams Dimensions: Height 12.5 cm (excluding base) and 13.7 cm (including base), length 14 cm The wooden base likely is an addition of the 19th century. Note the fine reddish-brown color of the horn.
