Aleksandr Yakovlevich Golovin (1863-1930) was a Russian and Soviet artist, set designer and decorator, prominent member of the 'Mir iskusstva' group, interior and furniture designer, and full member of the Academy of Arts. Together with K.A. Korovin, he contributed to the design of the Russian pavilion at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and the Metropol Hotel in Moscow. He worked extensively in the field of theatre and, in 1902, was invited to St Petersburg as Chief Artist of the Imperial Theatres. A production of Lermontov's play 'Maskarad' was planned for the centenary of the poet's birth in 1914 at the Alexandrinsky Theatre, with sets by Golovin, but the First World War prevented it from taking place. The production finally took place on 25 February 1917. Golovin paid particular attention to costumes, hairstyles, interiors and decorative details, all of which are reflected in the artistic conception documented in this publication.
