A NETSUKE OF AN OCTOPUS IN A SHELL BY RENSAI.
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), 2nd half of 19th c. Width 4.3 cm.
Ivory, the eyes are inlaid in dark horn. Its tentacles are folded beneath, a smaller shell is attached to the base. Signed in seal form Ren (Ishikawa Rensai, Asakusa school). Beautiful patina with few age cracks.
Provenance: Swiss private collection, acquired 21 July 1987 at St. James Gallery, Zurich (invoice with attest available).
