A PAIR OF ALLEGORICAL FIGURES “PRUDENCE” AND “FAITH” - The Embden Collection Flanders, first half of the 18th century. Boxwood, carved in the round. A female figure as an Allegory of Prudence with a mirror in her hand, a halo around her head, standing on a hemisphere, framed by a snake biting its tail. The base with relief decoration on all four sides in the form of a burning salamander, a basilisk in a cave, a burning hill, and a bird with a ring in its beak. A male figure as an Allegory of Faith with a star-studded cloak, a halo on his head, a cross in his hand, and various attributes of rulers at his feet (crowns and scepters). The base with relief decoration on all four sides in the form of symbols of martyrdom. H 25 and 25.5 cm. Partially incomplete. Chips. Losses. Restorations and additions.
