A PAIR OF CHARGERS, SAVONA, 18TH CENTURY
PAIR OF PARADE DISHES, SAVONA, 18TH CENTURY
in polychrome painted majolica, without support ring they have a slightly oblique and wavy brim with a mixtilinear and ribbed rim. In the centre of the cavetto on aerial clods one can make out characters and architecture outlined in manganese brown: in one a character seated at a table and a female figure with small objects in her hands, in the other a seated woman observes a gardener near a tree while a third character approaches carrying a plant, with a curious contrast between the Western-style architecture and the Catai characters; the brim of the dishes is decorated with a dense 'sponged' motif in brownish brown. For comparisons, see the dish from the Villa Cagnola in Varese (inv. no. C205), but also and especially the tureen with oriental figures, which shares similar decorative choices associated with a shape already studied by Cameirana, present in the Thesaurus . Traditionally attributed to the Folco factory in Savona, the mark of the manufactory with the letter F on the back of one dish is instead to be attributed to the Ferro family of ceramists; diam. cm 43.5, h. cm 6.5
