Lot no. 1118
A PAIR OF MOUNTED VASES - The Embden Collection Italy, probably Venice, 17th century. Blue glass, partly slightly spiral-shaped with gilt bronze mount, partly openwork. Ovoid vase body with funnel-shaped neck. Bronze decoration in the form of putto heads, leaf frieze, and volutes. Curved, ribbed volute handles at the top. Round, multi-profiled trumpet foot. H 24.5 cm. Glasses assorted, one heavily corroded. Cracks. Mount partly with losses and rubbed. Provenance: The Arlette and Antony Embden Collection, France. A pair of vases from the British Museum closely resembles the pair on offer (inv. no. S.714). Although the glass body is green, the mount, especially the ribbed volute handles and the putto heads on the sides, are similar to the pair of vases on offer. Interestingly, this type of vase can also be found in still lifes from the 17th century, such as in a painting by Juan van der Hamen y León (1596–1631) (Museo del Prado, Inv. No. P004158). * The full tax is charged on this item marked *, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum will be refunded to Purchasers providing a validly stamped export declaration.
