A PAIR OF SALT CELLARS Limoges, 16th century. Circle of Pierre Reymond (1513–1584). Enamel painted in grisaille technique in shades of beige and pink and with gold decoration on copper. The salt cellar with slightly baluster-shaped shaft on a round base. The wells show the profile of a woman and a caesar, respectively, surrounded by fruits, plants, and grotesque masks. The shaft features mythological ocean scenes (probably Amphitrite), leaf decoration, and ribbon decoration. The base is adorned with fruits, tendrils, leaves, garlands, masks, and heads. Translucent counter-enamel. H 11 cm, Ø 10 cm. Restored. Dents, scratches. Losses to the enamel. 1 repaired. Cf. a salt cellar by Pierre Reymond (1513–1584) in the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (inv. no. KHM 457-2).
