A ROMAN PANEL, PIETRO SEYTTER, 1736
PANEL, ROME, PIETRO SEYTTER, 1736
in polychrome scagliola of rectangular form depicting St. Francis at prayer . The work, signed and dated on the lower part Petrus Sayter Ing. - Romae 1736, belongs to the genre of inlaid scagliola with an engraving effect, which had a period of great fortune thanks to the work of some members of a family of artists of German origin, the Seytters, descendants of the painter Daniele Seytter (Vienna 1649 - Turin 1705), known as Daniele Fiammingo. Pietro, Amedeo and Tarsilla, who worked in Rome and have left signed works, used the two-colour technique of Carpi origin, but with the use of red hatching on a white background to perfectly imitate sanguine engravings, with a virtuoso search for trompe-l'oeil effects in the crumpled edges of the sheets, which seem to rest on marble backgrounds. The panel is mounted within a gilded wooden frame; 27.5x24.2 cm the panel, 41.2x36 cm overall
