A ROMAN SCULPTURE, NEOCLASSICAL PERIOD
SCULPTURE, ROME, NEOCLASSICAL PERIOD
white marble depicting the Pio-Clementino Hermes (or Hermes Belvedere ), derived from a statue of the Greek god Hermes preserved in the Pio-Clementino Museum, the largest complex in the Vatican Museums. In the past, the original was long known as Antinous of the Belvedere because of its identification with Antinous, the boy loved by the Emperor Hadrian, and because of its location in the Belvedere Courtyard, but its face does not recall the idealised face of Hadrian's young lover, and the cloak thrown over the left shoulder and wrapped around the arm and the relaxed contraposto suggest identification with Hermes, as he was more typically depicted in classical iconography; 100x40x27 cm
