Lot no. 192
A TRANSYLVANIAN SAXON CERAMIC PLATE, 1799 with very fine sgraffito decoration of an avian theme on a cobalt blue background, diameter: 28 cm (11 in.) LOT NOTES Traditional ceramics from Transylvania have always aroused the interest of specialists, collectors, but also art enthusiasts, especially due to its beautiful appearance and originality. The piece proposed today is represented by a plate (or blid, according to the popular name), ornamented with an avimorphic motif, made at the end of the 18th century in the famous Saxon pottery center in Saschiz (now Mureș county). The quality of the products and, especially, the manner of processing the vessels, contributed decisively to the fame of these potters. Due to the shape and technique of manufacture and decoration, their works are also known as "transylvanian cobalt blue pottery" or "sgraffito pottery". The Saxons were a German speaking ethnic group in the Transylvania region of Romania, Kingdom of Hungary, A plate with a similar bird motif, from 1804, can be seen at the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, Kolozsvár (Klausenburg, Cluj-Napoca).
