Lot no. 82
A very rare and massive blue and white "antiquities" porcelain fishbowl
China, Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912), Daoguang (1820 - 1850)
Finely painted in underglaze blue and white, this fishbowl, off very rare size was crafted for the enjoyment of both the imperial family and affluent scholars within their gardens and courtyards. They served not only as functional vessels for keeping fish but also as stunning decorative elements that added a touch of elegance and refinement to their surroundings.
The blue and white color scheme, achieved by applying cobalt oxide pigment under a clear glaze, showcases a striking contrast that is both visually appealing and culturally significant. The cobalt blue, prized for its rich hue and depth, was meticulously applied to create intricate designs that often featured motifs inspired by nature, such as lotus flowers, scrolling vines, or scenes of aquatic life.
The craftsmanship of this fishbowl is truly exceptional. The porcelain is delicate yet durable, with a smooth texture and a glossy finish. The intricate designs are rendered with precision and fluidity, showcasing the mastery of the artisans who created them.
