A very rare targe shield
dating: circa 1700
provenance: Scotland, Of round shape, made of wood, the entire external surface covered with leather and decorated with various round and semicircle rivets (small damages and missing). The rear part featuring four wooden boards, with some engravings at the centre, the letter 'X' and collection number '359'. Few remains of the leather handles with three iron rivets on each edge. A, Edinburgh & London 1881. Shield no. 3 of the Targets IV table features a similar decoration.Two other 18th century shields can be found in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, Laking ill. 1462 and 1463. diameter 50 cm.
