A very scarce iron-mounted targe dating: 18th Century provenance: Scotland, Of round, disc shape, made of wood, the entire surface covered with riveted, carved and pierced iron mounts (a small missing part). With an engraved and carved convex stud at the center with four interwoven oval rings, surrounded by six rosettes and triangular segments, border and side with riveted bands. The inside lined with remains of leather and with remains of the handle. See a series of similar shields in 'Ancient Scottish Weapons' by James Drummond, R. S. A., Edinburgh & London 1881. Shield no. 5 of the 'Targets 1' plate has a similar decoration.Two other 18th-century shields can be found in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, Laking pic. 1462 and 1463. diameter 37 cm.
