Lot no. 715
A wheel-lock carbine from the personal guard of Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau
dating: circa 1600
provenance: Salzburg, Rifled, two-stage, 11 mm cal. barrel, rings at the girdle, deep mark 'Z' in a shield at the base, high brass sight, the round part featuring a moulded muzzle and foresight; lock with flat lock plate, wheel with lid and integrated wheel key, spring safety lock and movable pan cover; fruitwood full stock (restored) decorated with the typical bone inlaid-works engraved with floral motifs, bands and openings; long iron trigger guard. Bone-tipped wooden ramrod.
The mark 'Z' stands for G. Zellner from Zell am Wallersee, Austria. Twelve other carbines show the same mark. Other models were produced by Valentin Klett in Suhl. Beautiful example of firearm which belonged to the Prince Bishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau's bodyguard (1559-1617).
Raitenau was the founder of the town of Salzburg and he became famous because he loved to provide his troops with very prestigious firearms (the group of firearms included a wheellock carbine, a painted shield and a halberd).
Raitenau was then arrested with the accusation of having seduced the daughter of an important citizen in Salzburg. According to Alaric and Serpette's article published in 'La Gazette des Armes' no. 200, May 1990, about 100 carbines were produced. Whereas most wheels were covered with convex mounts, some of them (like in this case) were provided with a wheel key shaped as a butterfly. These types of carbines can be found in the most important museums included the Bayrisches Nationalmuseum and certainly in the Salzburg Museum. Many of them has been recently sold by auction:Sotheby's: Henk Visser Collection July, 3rd 1990 lot 68Czerny's: April 2011, lot 1330 e June 2012, lot 962Galerie Fischer: September 2015, lot 1330 length 83.5 cm.
