A wheel lock gun with the von Trapp family crest dating: 17th/18th Century provenance: Austria, Round, smoothbore, 17,6 mm cal barrel. Probably replaced for hunting at the time of use. Bore needs cleaning, vent with scaling. Lock with inner wheel and smooth plate. Some pitting. Wooden full stock richly decorated with bone inlays. The left side, between the lock screws and the cheekpiece, featuring two beautiful scenes depicting men with lances fighting fairy-tale creatures (a huge wolf and a three-headed dragon) surrounded by various other animals including hounds, hares and another small dragon, all featuring a dense pattern of scrolls with flowers and fruits. The other parts of the stock with similar decorative themes featuring animals and intertwining lines dotted with flowers and fruits. With a moulded and engraved inlay depicting the emblem of the Counts Trapp below the butt stock. Iron trigger guard, brass barrel bracket, light horn muzzle ring. Dark-horn-tipped, wooden ramrod. Patchbox with wooden lid decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays. Iron butt plate. length 97,3 cm.
