ABELAM, Maprik district, Papua New Guinea. Shell (Tridacna giga - giant cactus) An ancient "Yua or Yëwaa" coin in the shape of a flat ring with a traditional pattern of oblique and parallel notches. This coin, prized by the Abelam, was used for compensation, exchanges and weddings (six rings). Early 20th century. Size: 24x23 cm. Provenance: Collection of a couple of collectors, Blois.
