Lot no. 35
ABRATE (Angelo). Grandes Jorasses, l'arête des Hirondelles. 1944. Oil on canvas, 59 x 48 cm, signed and dated lower right, framed with a protective glass. A very fine high mountain view by the painter Angelo Abrate (Turin 1900 - Sallanches 1985). A self-taught artist inspired by Cesare Maggi, he painted mountain landscapes from his studio, both in summer and winter. He fled the fascist regime in 1933 and settled in Sallanches. This canvas was painted during the German occupation of the free zone, when Abrate had to return to Italy, not without making many excursions into the high mountains. He returned to Sallanches, his adopted home, after the end of the war. The Mont-Blanc massif and its surroundings, on both the French and Italian sides, were his main sources of inspiration.
