Our bouquet of dahlias and sunflowers with pompons was intended for the decoration of the Gailhadet estate, commissioned by Mr Castel, Member of Parliament for Aude. This decor, which was partly unfinished, was to include work on fields and flowers. The motif of the bouquet of dahlias was to appear several times in the work of Achille Laugé. It first appeared in an oil on canvas from 1916, now in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Narbonne. That same year, the artist delivered to the Manufacture des Gobelins his models for a tapestry project commissioned by the French government on the theme of "The Seasons". The motif of dahlias in a vase can be seen in Laugé's model and then in the tapestry produced by the Manufacture des Gobelins. The dahlias, with their multiplicity of petals, allowed Laugé to fully express his talent for colour modulations and the divisionist touch.
