Penck was famous for his graphic symbols and stickmen - the so-called ‘standard images’ - which seem like Asian calligraphy or graffiti. Penck is keen to provide his works with such simple symbols that they each viewer can understand his works. The edges partly worn or soiled. However the folding screen is visually in attractive condition. The height measures 200 cm. The total width is 320 cm. A.R. Penck (b. 1939) Born in Dresden in 1939, the painter and sculptor Ralf Winkler adopted several pseudonyms, of which ‘A. R. Penck’ is certainly the best-known. He received his first drawing lessons from the artist Strawalde in the early 1950s, when he also completed an apprenticeship as advertising artist. Whilst his work was under various restrictions in the German Democratic Republic, he received the Wilhelm-Grohmann Award from the Academy of Arts in West Berlin in 1975. In 1976, he made the acquaintance of Jörg Immendorff, with whom he collaborated for a few years. In 1980, Penck moved to West Germany. Three years later he settled in London, followed by Dusseldorf, where he became a professor at the Art Academy in 1988. After his retirement in 2003, he settled in Dublin, where he still lives and works today. Works by A.R. Penck are on display in major museums collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt/Main, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
