Lot no. 2
ADAMS-REILLY (Antony). The Chain of Mont-Blanc, from an actual survey in 1863-4. London, Longman & Co, on behalf of the Alpine Club, 1865. One colour lithographed folding map, cloth-backed, folded in a cloth cover (Bound in contemporary style). This beautiful map of the Mont-Blanc massif was drawn up after two climbing campaigns, some of which were carried out in the company of Whymper. It was the most complete and accurate map of the massif at the time. It was also one of the rarest and most beautiful. "This map is famous - and rightly so - because it finally solves the problem of the topography of Mont-Blanc on the Swiss side, namely that of the relationship between the Tour glacier and the Saleina glacier, which had undergone a surprising deformation during the survey by the Swiss cartographers". (Aliprandi, la découverte du Mont-Blanc par les cartographes, Piuli & Verlucca, 2000).
Size: 38.8 x 72.5 cm.
Ex-libris Henri Ferrand pasted on the flyleaf with a label stuck in the upper right corner. Autograph letter in pencil signed by Francis Fox Tuckett in the upper left corner. A very fine copy.
