Lot no. 1893
Adolf Frey-Moock (1881 Jona/Canton of Sankt Gallen - 1954 Egnach/Canton of Thurgau) "Odysseus and Calypso". Original title Scene from Greek mythology on the shores of the Mediterranean: the nymph Calypso had kept the hero Odysseus on her island Ogygia for seven years after a shipwreck and even promised him immortality if he stayed with her. However, as Odysseus missed his home and his wife Penelope, Calypso was finally forced to release him by godfather Zeus. The painting, which is typical of the motif and style, is one of the Swiss painter's symbolist Art Nouveau paintings that made him famous. Frey-Moock went to Munich in 1902, where he studied at the Academy under Karl Raupp and Wilhelm von Diez from 1904 and became Franz von Stuck's assistant in 1904. In his works, he often depicted lovers, mythological and bacchanalian scenes, strongly influenced by both Stuck and Arnold Böcklin. In 1908 he exhibited for the first time at the Künstlerhaus in Zurich, and from 1909 in the exhibitions of the newly founded "Deutscher Künstlerverband" in Munich, later the Munich artists' association "Die Unabhängigen".
