Adolf Schinnerer was a German painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and art writer. He lost his father at the age of ten. His brother was the art historian Johannes Schinnerer (1883-1944); his son was the cinematographer Albrecht Schinnerer (1941-2011). Adolf Schinnerer studied at the Karlsruhe Art Academy and was a student of Walter Conz, Ludwig Schmid-Reutte, and Wilhelm Trübner, among others. He then studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, also studying art history. In 1909/1910, he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize, which included a year-long stay in Italy. After several years of military service during the Great War, Schinnerer acquired house called "Schlössl" in the Haimhausen artists' colony in 1918. He also rented flats in Munich. In 1920, he was appointed to the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule München (Munich State School of Applied Arts). Inspired by French Impressionism, he created figure paintings and landscapes; later he limited his range to a few strong colours. In 1913 he co-founded the Münchener Neue Secession (Munich New Secession, MNS). In 1924, he joined the etching and drawing class at the Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to his teaching activities, Schinnerer was an extremely productive artist. He is considered a master of the drypoint. He also excelled as an exhibition organiser. During the Nazi era, he participated in at least 17 exhibitions. Nevertheless, several of his works were removed from museums and confiscated in 1937 as part of the "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) campaign. In 1945, Adolf Schinnerer became acting director and in 1946 president of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, until he retired in 1947. In 1946, he took over the reorganisation and, until 1947, the chairmanship of the "Künstlervereinigung Dachau" (Dachau Artists' Association, KVD). He was also involved in the re-establishment of the Association for Original Etching and the "Vereinigung der Freunde der Staatlichen Graphischen Sammlung München" (Association of Friends of the State Graphic Collection Munich). Schinnerer was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists' Association). In 1963, the Munich "Neue Gruppe" honoured him in a memorial exhibition for its deceased members at the Haus der Kunst.
