ADRIAEN VAN DER KABEL (attr. to) (Rijswijk, 1630 or 1631 - Lyon, 1705) Fantasy Mediterranean harbour view with market scene Oil on canvas, cm 153.5X206 The paintings depict fantasy Mediterranean harbour views and the style and lettering suggest attribution to an artist active during the 17th and 18th centuries. The illustrative typology evokes examples of the Italianising landscape painting developed in Rome during the 17th century and popularised by Luca Carlevarijs and Claude Lorrain. Of particular quality is the cut with which the image is conceived and the chromatic tones with which the coastlines and buildings are outlined. In the painting in the catalogue, the reading of the work is facilitated by the good preservation of the pictorial fabric, which with its veiling makes the vision extremely realistic, as does the transparent luminosity of the air. The scenic construction is also well conceived from a perspective point of view and the figures are well delineated, measuring themselves in the landscape with remarkable harmony. The overall result is therefore of the highest quality and leads to the attribution to the famous Nordic landscape painter Adriaen van der Cabel, active in Rome around the seventh and eighth decade. Cabel was a true master for many northern Italianising artists; Manglard trained with him and Jacob de Heusch, Jan Frand Bloemen and Glauber studied his art. It is also important to note that Cabel was passing through Genoa, as Meijer indicates. In this case, the imaginative insertion of Cecilia Metella's tomb finds the same scenic setting in a rural key in the Landscape sold at Sotheby's in Florence on 4 December 1983 (cf. M.
