Commentary:
Adrien Hébert is a Quebec artist. He was particularly adept at portraying the effervescence and urban bustle that was a symptom of the modern world. In the 1920s, he turned his attention to the port of Montreal, which faces the St. Lawrence River. These docks form a modern counterpoint to the wilderness explored by Jacques Cartier four hundred years earlier: the Iroquoian village topped by a hill has since given way to the steam of machines.
