Adrien HEBERT (1890-1967) The docks Oil on canvas Signed 'adrien Hébert' lower right 92 x 61 cm (Yellowed varnish, small cracks) Provenance : - Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) - Then Admiral Philippe de Gaulle (1921-2024) - Then descendants Commentary: Adrien Hébert is a Quebec artist. He was particularly adept at portraying the effervescence and urban bustle that was a symptom of the modern world. In the 1920s, he turned his attention to the port of Montreal, which faces the St. Lawrence River. These docks form a modern counterpoint to the wilderness explored by Jacques Cartier four hundred years earlier: the Iroquoian village topped by a hill has since given way to the steam of machines. Adrien HEBERT (1890-1967)
