Lot no. 1556
Aert van der Neer (1603/04 Gorinchem - 1677 Amsterdam) 18th century successor. River landscape by moonlight A river landscape illuminated by the light of the full moon with boats and anglers on the banks, flanked by buildings. Aert van der Neer, who was unrecognised during his lifetime and died completely impoverished, is today regarded as one of the most important landscape painters of his time. Van der Neer's favourite motifs were the rivers and watercourses around Amsterdam, often by moonlight. In these atmospheric, effective depictions, the painter masterfully rendered the phenomena of light and vivid cloud formations in the night sky, influencing generations of painters right up to the 19th century; Aert van der Neer is known to have lived in Amsterdam since 1629 and probably received his artistic training from his brother-in-law Jochem Govertsz. Camphuysen and his friend Albert Cuyp, with whom he worked. Aert van der Neer's moonlit landscapes can be found in numerous important museums in Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Schwerin, St. Petersburg and Stockholm. Oil/oak panel.
