DREYFUS AFFAIR. Exceptional album containing 24 black and white prints on albumen paper of the protagonists of the review trial of Captain Alfred DREYFUS held in Rennes in August and September 1899. The photographs are 57 x 83 mm, one of which, from a professional photographer, is 120 x 170 mm, and are fixed with corners in a cardboard album measuring 13.5 x 22 cm, on the cover of which is written "Affaire Dreyfus" in attractive calligraphy. All the illustrations are annotated in pen and ink, giving the precise names of the people depicted. The album also contains a small handwritten visiting card, size 59 x 100 mm, which reads: "Service de sûreté, LAISSEZ PASSER ET PÉNÉTRER PARTOUT, M. CALLARD, Le directeur de la Sûreté Générale (signature de VIGUIÉ), le Président du Conseil de guerre (signature de JOUAUST)", stamped by the Rennes Engineering Department and on the back by the Ille-et-Vilaine Prefect's office. At the end of the album, there is a press clipping entitled "Le départ de Dreyfus" ("Dreyfus's departure") in which Mr Callard is described as "attaché to the cabinet of Mr Prefect". It was he who accompanied Alfred Dreyfus on his release from prison in Rennes on the night of 20 September 1899. The prints are in good condition with good contrast.
Although several photo albums of Alfred Dreyfus's revision trial, which took place at the Lycée des garçons (now the Lycée Emile Zola) from 7 August to 9 September 1899, are known to exist in public collections (Hadamard, Chincholle, known as the "stenographers", Musée de Bretagne), the interest of this one lies in the fact that the author of these photographs is identified, as his pass also appears in the album. CALLARD, who was attached to the office of the Prefect Duréault and who would be responsible for escorting Dreyfus when he left Rennes prison for good. He was a member of the Sûreté Générale, some of whose photos show members of this service, either unknown (escorting Picquart) or identified as Hennion, Cochefert and Vigier, thus providing another perspective in the coverage of this revision trial. In particular, he witnessed an altercation between General Mercier, Dreyfus's main accuser, and the journalist Georges Bourdon from Le Figaro. However, it should be pointed out that some of the photos were not taken by him, but by other photographers who were present at the scene and can be found in other albums.
