Officially established on 14 December 1922 by King George V, the Pretoria Mint opened its doors in 1923. The influx of gold only began in earnest a year or so later - as Marsh indicates in his book, The Gold Sovereign - with a single gold deposit, old jewellery, which was valued at 406 pounds and 9 pence. The refined gold was used to strike sovereigns, which were returned to the depositor, for a total of 406 copies. The existence of a 1923 example in the collection of the Royal Mint in Pretoria is attested by data from 1980 to 1985. There are 9 graded examples at NGC and 14 at PCGS.
