Lot no. 55
After François Duquesnoy, Rome, 17th century, Andrea the Apostle, terracotta By François Duquesnoy, Rome, 17th century SAINT ANDREA THE APOSTLE terracotta sculpture, 47x33x15 cm Literature M. Boudon-Machuel, Francois Duquesnoy 1597-1643, Paris 2005, p. 235 no. E.13a dér.18 The work is derived directly from the marble sculpture made by the Flemish master François Duquesnoy (Brussels 1597 - Livorno 1643) for one of the four pillar chapels of St. Peter's Basilica, a project directed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and completed in 1640. Duquesnoy's Saint Andrew enjoyed immediate fame and became the prototype for depictions of the saint, later revisited by many artists: depicted half-naked and leaning on the instrument of his martyrdom, a cross of Saint Andrew, his left arm and gaze raised to heaven. This terracotta is very faithful to Duquesnoy's original, suggesting that the author was very close to the Flemish artist, probably active in his workshop. However, it should be noted that some details differ, such as the treatment of the drapery and the absence of the upper part of the cross behind the martyr, suggesting a desire for an original interpretation.
