Agostino Beltrano (attributed to) - Martyrdom of St. Erasmus - oil on canvas 75 x 61 cm This work, depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus, can be ascribed to the Neapolitan school of the first half of the 17th century. The painting, with its intense dramatic charge and refined luministic rendering, fits into the lively context of Neapolitan Baroque painting, showing affinities with the work of Bernardo Cavallino and Antonio De Bellis. We thank Professor Riccardo Lattuada for confirming the attribution of the work on a photographic basis. The author's hand is to be sought in the artistic environment active in Naples in those years, strongly influenced by Caravaggio's naturalism and a growing tendency towards a more elegant and measured narrative. The expressive rendering of the faces, the attention to scenic construction and the calibrated chromatic composition confirm the link with that generation of Neapolitan painters who knew how to combine pathos and measure.
