JUNO ASKING AEOLUS TO FREE THE WINDS AGAINST THE FLEET OF AENEAS
Canvas
Old restorations
Juno asks Aeolus to unleash the winds against Aeneas' fleet, canvas, with restorations
47 x 62,5 CM - 18,5 x 24,6 IN.
Supposedly a pupil of the Carracci, he was in fact taught by the painter Paul Bril. A painter of landscapes, particularly seascapes, he is also known as a burin engraver. His talent for seascapes also stems from his time on the Livorno galleys. He later worked in Genoa alongside Gentileschi and as a decorator in several palaces.
In the Aeneid, Juno asks Aeolus to unleash the winds against Aeneas' fleet, which is about to drive the Trojans back to the coast of Libya, not far from Carthage. This subject is dealt with in another composition (octagonal) by Tassi that appeared on the art market in 1986 (48 x 65 CM) Sotheby's London, 19 February 1986
