FLAG OR FACING EAGLE MODELLED ON THE 1860 EAGLES Popular work from the Second Empire Carved wood, gilded and patinated, with box. H. 22 cm - W 23 cm B.E. Presented on an eagle stand from the Palais princier de Monaco museum in wood and gilded stucco. Provenance : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (3rd sale, lot 168) A wooden flag or facing eagle in the model of the eagles of 1860, popular work from the Second Empire period Historical background : This eagle was referenced by expert René Johnson as an eagle made during Emperor Napoleon I's stay on the island of Elba (1814). However, its close resemblance to Second Empire models rules out this hypothesis.
