AIRE MASSIM, Papua New Guinea. Wood, rattan, traces of pigment. Ceremonial axe handle in bent wood used to display green basalt 'beku' axe blades. These axes were also used as the price of a blood debt or as a token of a peace agreement, or even as a bargaining chip. Length: 60 cm. Width: 9 cm.
