Avignon, Domergue, 1733. In-4, brown basane, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). Frontispiece, 12 ff. n.c., 299 pp. 2 plates h-t. - 1 f., XVI pp. 274 pp. 4 f. table.
Published on the same date as the Lyon original.
It is illustrated with a frontispiece, beautiful vignettes at the head of the chapters and 2 hors-texte plates showing the heart of Jesus as it appeared to Marguerite. The second part of this edition contains the astonishing autobiography of Alacoque, who from childhood conversed with Jesus and inflicted mortifications on herself. When she became a nun at Paray-le-Monial, she provoked the hostility of the other nuns and became the object of attacks from the devil. She continued her maceration exercises all the more ardently. "My whole body was in extreme pain and that relieved a little the burning thirst I had for suffering. This devouring fire feeds only on the wood of the Cross...". In the first part, Father Galliffet wanted to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart, as it appeared in Marguerite's visions.
