Lot no. 146
Alain SAINT-OGAN Zig et Puce singers of the streets Gouache signed lower left India ink, gouache and watercolour for an illustration showing Zig, Puce playing the accordion, and Alfred, surrounded by spectators accompanying them, and in the background a policeman watching them from a ladder. Drawing created for the wooden puzzles made by Jouets Vera. Signed 15.7 x 19.8 cm Zig et Puce saw the light of day in May 1925 in Dimanche Illustré, a supplement to the Excelsior newspaper. Alain Saint-Ogan, who until then had been a press cartoonist and illustrator, became a comic strip artist, a discipline that was still relatively unknown in France. In December of the same year, the "two kids from Paris" were joined by Alfred the penguin, whom they had met on the ice floes of the North Pole. The first album, En route pour l'Amérique, was published by Hachette in November 1927. The adventures around the world continued until the early 1950s: 16 titles in all, including Zig et Puce à New York (1931), Zig et Puce aux Indes (1932), Zig et Puce au XXIe siècle (1935), Zig et Puce et le cirque (1951), Zig et Puce en Éthiopie (1952). The series ended in 1956, and from 1963 to 1969 was continued by Greg in the magazine Tintin (Les nouvelles aventures de Zig, Puce et Alfred). Alain SAINT-OGAN
